taper's log - 1999

Train, 1.28.1999
First time seeing Train. Funny story - Train played on campus, on Wilbur Field, my frosh year. Same field where Phish played in 1992. Train has since gotten bigger...though not as big as Phish :-) The 1999 show was this tiny old high school auditorium.

Strangefolk, 3.6.1999
So this show was the night before I went on a trip down to Santa Barbara for a D&T show. I'm nuts. It was at the Great American in the city. They take your whole ticket as you go in. I hadn't learned yet that I can get it back at the end of the show. SF put on a sweet set, and the scene was so chill. Several people kept asking me if I was at the Dead show at the GAMH in '75. "Sure. I was -3 years old then..."
Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds, 3.7.1999
This is show had one of the most amazing Halloweens I've ever been witness to. Dave was so into it, he actually kicked out as he was singing, as if he wanted to strike at the song's antagonist. Amazing. Great crowd in a great venue helped...
Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds, 3.12.1999
I'm not sure why I have this whole ticket - my actual seats were 4th row. Great spot, but the people around me were all terrible. Dave was messed up, too - seemed very out of it. Plus I blew my tire on the way home. Not my best experience...
Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds, 3.13.1999
This show made up for the Sacto one. Set was good. Not great, but very good (Help Myself and Last Stop) and they were _tight_. They just sounded really together and so good in the BCT...
Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds, 3.25.1999
I know the ticket says 2.1.1999 - that was the original date of this show. It was rescheduled because Dave got the flu. Gwen Knapp was supposed to go, but couldn't make the new date so I went...Mike Vernal and I drove up 9 hours on 3.25, saw the show, then drove all the way back on 3.26 to see AGR at the Wetlands...

Agents of Good Roots, 3.26.1999
Not much of a ticket anyway - just one of those "Admit One" carnival stubs, really. The drive was totally worth it as AGR just tore Wetlands to little bits and pieces. I swear AGR is the band whose talent is most disproportionate to notoriety.
Rusted Root, 3.30.1999
One and only time I've seen these guys. They were taping the show for a live release (though it hasn't surfaced) and put on a very tight show. Good time, though I'm at a loss for what else to say...
[Missing Ticket]
Medeski, Martin, and Wood, 4.7.1999
At Palookaville in Santa Cruz. First time there, first time seeing MMW. I remember thinking that 1) I had a great time, 2) MMW are all tremendous musicians and 3) maybe I'd prefer to see them sitting because my lack of rhythm and their incredible jamming made my grooving kinda funny...
Funky Meters, 5.15.1999
Seems like my shows are getting more spread out. Tthe Meters are just this amazing NOLA funk band. The encore was one of the best encores I've ever seen - something like 45 minutes long and ended with a clearly impromptu Voodoo Chile
Ben Folds Five, 6.13.1999
This was the night before I headed home for the summer, so kind of a nice sendoff. Ben and the gang put on a fun, tight show as always, and the crowd was really into it. I really liked this show a lot.

Agents of Good Roots, 7.15.1999
Back at the Wetlands. I started the summer hoping to go to a lot of NYC shows after work, but the hours were just killing me. I actually fell asleep at this show. So the things I remember are the slumber, Ron Diaz being himself, and then my friend Andrew getting lost over and over trying to get back across the GWB.

Guster, 7.22.1999
Wetlands in NYC. This was a "secret" pre-Woodstock show under the name "Sweet Maynard and his Sassy Sailors." There's a story behind that name, of course. I went with my co-worker and friend Paige...I kinda miss her. Good thing I didn't get her and Mike killed that night on the way home.
Vertical Horizon, 7.24.1999
I only saw 5 shows the whole summer of '99 because of my job. Friend and I drove up 4 hours to see VH with my buddy Mike Vernal up in Boston - great show, and they are _such_ rock stars. Wonder if Mike remembers getting drunk and his friends writing all over him...
Dave Matthews Band, 8.7.1999
This is the _only_ full-band 1999 show I saw. One of the chefs from the tour crew played electric on Beauty of Wynona - just a fabulous version of it. Hartford was a cool place, though it would've been nice to have been able to hang out with all those people for more than 9 hours total.
Pat McGee Band, 8.19.1999
First time for PMB. I thought they put on a great show, and I was stoked about being at the TLA in Philly, but the crowd was, honestly, really not into it. Finally put some faces to familiar names, though. Ben, Keith, Rawle, Simeon (I think he was there), Morgan...et. al.
Alanis Morrisette and Tori Amos, 9.19.1999
This was a quasi-birthday concert. Good show, though not great. Tori is better in smaller venues, I think. Alanis twirled a lot.
Joshua Bell, Sam Bush, Edgar Meyer and Mike Marshall, 10.3.1999
This was a Stanford event - only time I've ever gone to one of these. Was like 3rd row and I heard Sam's mandolin way more from his mandolin than from the PA. They are all bad-ass musicians, and nothing like bringing great artists together.
Disco Biscuits, 10.7.1999
I eventually did figure out that I could get my stub _back_ at the end of the night at the GAMH...I ran mics in a hat on the floor for this show (no stand) and DB made me want to dance so bad I almost just went for it at the risk of the tape. That's saying a lot from a taper.
Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals, 10.8.1999
First time seeing these guys headline (see HORDE in 1998). The Greek Theatre is a great place, though the women there have impressive lungs. My ears still ring. But Ben and the gang can play...Juan Nelson on bass kicks ass, and the Meters opened. Sweet...
Bruce Springsteen & the E-Street Band, 10.26.1999
This was a spur-of-the-moment trip with my friend Mari. We were in the 4th to last row, almost behind the stage, of the Oakland Arena. But let me tell you - Bruce knows how to work a crowd, NO JOKE. Great show.

A Bridge School Benefit, 10.30.1999
I can only ever seem to get to one of the Bridge School shows per year - never both. Anyway - I was glad to catch the first show. Tom Waits was just...stylin', and The Who...that was like a religious experience for me. Brian Wilson just enthralled me. Once again, the Bridge School Benefit was tremendous.

Flecktones & Grisman Quintet, 11.11.1999.
Wow - what a night. Though I wished I could see a Flecktones-only show, it was terrific to see these two great groups together. First time for both bands.
Guster 11.12.1999
First Guster headlining show for me in SF. It was a fun show, even if the acoustics weren't so hot in the GAMH. I was the only taper, and that felt good...until I failed to do a good job. Ugh.

God Street Wine
12.21-23.1999
Last three shows for GSW ever, and "epic" would barely begin to describe them. Guests were coming in left and right, alll of the bands members over the years were there the whole time, and everyone was just into the groove and appreciating the band and wishing they'd keep going and...you get the idea. Wow. The 11 discs that cover these 3 days are some of my favorite. It even made the hours and hours spent on the corner outside the Wetlands in the freezing NYC winter worth it.
Pat McGee Band, 12.26.1999
LOOK! I got Pat to sign my stub! :-) I don't do the whole "signing" thing much. Anyway - when I go back east, I try to see a lot of shows. So I saw 5 in 9 days. This is my only PMB show in VA, which would've been cool but the State Theatre has the worst acoustics in the world...
Pat McGee Band, 12.27.1999
Back to the TLA with PMB, and damn if they didn't win the crowd over by this time. By the time Pat did "In Your Eyes" about an hour in, the crowd was singing along, swaying, dancing...it was a real groovy and rocking party. Pulled a nice tape, too, if I may be forgiven a bit of immodesty.
